Fear Screen Marks Triumphant Official Launch at Middlesbrough Venue.

Fear Screen has successfully inaugurated its inaugural festival with a remarkable evening of independent filmmaking on Tuesday, 28th October 2025, hosted at Roxy Movies cinema in Middlesbrough. The event showcased the collective talent of emerging horror creators, establishing the festival as a vibrant platform for genre excellence within the North East creative landscape.

A Night of Celebration Despite Logistical Challenges

Despite navigating a last-minute date adjustment—relocated from 29th October to 28th October with merely a week's notice—the launch event achieved complete sellout status, reflecting considerable appetite within the regional filmmaking community. The atmospheric venue thrummed with creative energy as independent filmmakers, genre enthusiasts, industry professionals, and members of Middlesbrough's emerging creative scene converged to celebrate fresh, boundary-pushing talent in horror cinema.

Showcasing Creative Excellence Under Pressure

The evening's programme commenced with the premiere screening of Fear Screen's inaugural 48-Hour Film Challenge, a showcase of exceptional filmmaking executed under exacting time constraints. The competition highlighted the resourcefulness and creative ambition of participating filmmakers, each contributing diverse interpretations of horror craft. Following enthusiastic audience reception, the Best Film Award was presented, honouring standout achievement and recognising the considerable technical and narrative skill demonstrated by challenge participants working within such a compressed production timeline.

Feature Presentations and Atmospheric Storytelling

The premiere programme continued with special screenings of two compelling feature films: Drained and The Cellar, providing audiences with immersive, atmospheric horror experiences on the cinema's full theatrical platform. Both presentations delivered the sophisticated genre cinema that Fear Screen commits to championing, offering audiences engaging narratives and demonstrating the calibre of independent horror production currently emerging within UK filmmaking.

Community Engagement and Festival Impact

Attendance remained robust throughout the evening, with the majority of guests remaining for the complete programme, though a modest number of attendees departed following the 48-Hour Film Challenge screenings to view their own submissions. The sustained energy and positive reception throughout the night underscored the genuine enthusiasm within Middlesbrough's creative community for dedicated horror film programming and independent filmmaker support.

Looking Forward

Jay Finlayson Founder of Fear Screen commented:

"Launching Fear Screen has represented an incredible milestone for everyone involved. We are profoundly grateful for the enthusiasm and support demonstrated by filmmakers, industry professionals, and genre fans who joined us on the evening. The community response has exceeded our expectations, particularly given the scheduling complexities we navigated. This inaugural event represents merely the beginning of Fear Screen's mission—we are already energised by the prospect of expanded programming and increased collaboration across the North East creative sector and beyond."

Fear Screen remains committed to its core mission: championing innovative independent horror cinema, providing meaningful platform and recognition for emerging filmmakers, and cultivating a thriving, inclusive community around genre film culture across the North East and nationally.
